Marc sat at his desk after finishing his breakfast with Ivy. He had already given orders to get the flight deck in inspection order. He had replicated some of the special 'Iverson' coffee and began to read reports when Colonel Kaine's alert came across his screen. He activated his communications link to her Ready Room. "Lieutenant Marc Lassiter reporting flight deck ready for deployment."

Marc acknowledged the Colonel's response then headed out to the flight deck. He looked at the new fighters with their sleek simplicity. He had heard about these craft and hoped the Tarawa would rate one of the new shipments. He drew his hand across the side of the craft watching his refelection on the side.
"What do you think of her sir?"
Marc turned arouned to see a man, well not at first because he wasn't a tall man. His name was Barthelemew Patricowski. He ran the deckhands. Chief Patricowski wasn't a tall man he stood about five feet even. The pilots had nicknamed him 'Hedgehog'. He was a briliant engineer and kept the deck in perfect shape. Marc has brought him with him from his last posting. Tarawa was such a prestigous assignment that he jumped at the chance.
"I think its 'nova' Hedge," Marc smiled. "Supernova even, I think I would give my life to fly her."
"Well," Hedgehog smiled. "I don't think they'll ask that much, but it will have to wait until the next exercise. I've already heard that the Colonel is touring a relative around the ship. I made sure the deck was sorted out."
"Yeah, I heard the same thing" Marc confirmed. "She seemed distracted when I commed her. The pilots have been informed to be in flight gear. I don't think she wants us formal. In the meantime, prep a fighter to be readyto go. One or the other may want to take a joy ride."
"Way ahead of you," Hedgehog laughed. "Ive got one prepped with weapons disabled so there's no funny stuff and knowing you as I do, I also prepped two more for escort duty."
"Thanks," He turned to leave. "I'm going back to my office to study the specs on these birds."

Barthalemew Patricowski had been rooting underneath the new Fighter all day but he had finally found what he was looking for. Lieutenant Lassiter had tested the fighter and found it had what he called 'A hitch' right before it went to work. It took the man they called "Hedgehog' all morning but he had found the problem. A redundant safety protocol it was an extra compoenent that allowed the auxilury computer system to run an extra check right before warp. The result was a lag between activation and deployment of warp engine. He had taken time to clean up. He wasn't an ungly man, but you wouldn't call him handsome either. He had dark brown eyes and blonde hair. Thought he was short in stature he wasn't small. He was a muscular man who prided himself on his workout ethic.
Though his body and look was gruff he had a young sounding voice that told the tale of his age. He looked over the flight deck which seemed in good condition then rang the chime to the Lieutenant's office. Barthelemew liked Lassiter. He semed to love fighters just as much as the Deck Chief did and held him above his own exacting standards. The deck wasn't a mess when Lassiter came to Tarawa. It was in good shape. Its the attitueds tha changed. Everyone was out to do their best and make themselves the best flight crew in the fleet. There was no long an idea that one could rest on ones laurels and assume that one was the best. They were asking the questions everyday that Bart would. When he was beckoned to enter, the young chief felt at ease.
"You've been scarse all morning Hedge," Lassiter greeted him. "Whats on your mind?"
"The new fighters of course sir." He smiled. "As if you didn't know."
"I had expected you'd at least have had breakfast before you jumped into the guts of one of those fighters."
"You present me with a puzzle and expect me to just let it sit on the table? He smiled. You know me better than that sir. He placed the small component on his desk.
So thats the culprit?
Near as I can figure. He pushed it around on the desk. Of course I won't know for sure till we tested it.
I get it, I get it. He waved him off. Tomorrow. I'm still expecting an inspection today. Righto sir. He snapped him a sharp salute. I"ll double check the deck and the fighters. Make sure all the knobs are polishes till you can see your reflection. Very well Chief. He saluted him back. Have at it. Dismissed.
The young man walked out with a spring in his step.

The TL opened and she walked out. As usual her movements were percise and over the years had developed an uncanny ability to remain unnoticed. She looked around and saw the activity around the fighters. She moved over to the simulators, looked at the programs they were set at.
One pilot was in the simulator, and she tapped a code, looking at the readout. On her padd she tapped in the pilots name, 2nd Lt Michael Smythe. She noticed the program was set a level that was under his present skill level. She made a note of that.
Then moved over to the fighters where she was suddendly noticed.

Patricowski stepped out from behind one the fighters he was himself inspecting and noticed the Commandant. Commandant on deck! He said and all the pilots and deckhands lined up in formation. Bart gave Sandy a crisp salute then stood attention.

She returns his salute. "How long does it take for your people to notice someone who is not assigned to the flight deck?"

"Well, by regulation we can't post guard" He pondered. "Security wise we tend to leave that up to Marine Infantry or Fleet security, but had you been out of uniform I would say the response would be different. Our security tends to be towards unmarked craft flying in, but response times can vary depending upon the Def Con. Normally three to five minutes under these circumstances."

She nodded. "I'll make sure you have the people you need lets try and reduce that slightly, if possible. Would you like to show me around?"

That would be my pleasure Major. He turned so no one else could see the smile he gave her then lead the way to the training simulator. "Here's the first stop out flight simulator."

"I wanted to ask you, why is 2nd Lt Michael Smythe working on a program that is about 2 levels under his skills?"
