he nodded slowly "I do have a particular concern. What if I am correct and all this thing wants to do is to blow up this ship? Perhaps we should go to red alert... Wake up every crew member, I believe that it's only a matter of time before it tries again. This time it knows that we know about it, it may decide that it cant waste anymore time.... I believe it will try to control either A) Someone in a command position or B) a person with extensive training in engineering.... It may try to take a tactical advantage any way it can... The best way it seems to do that is to disable the transporters and to disable to Turbo Lifts. I believe it will do anything to slow us down so we must do everything in our power to get the strategic advantage... I suggest red alert, security escorts for crew members, double the security in engineering and on the bridge"

"Those are all excellent suggestions, doctor, but the alien has already beaten us to the disabling of the transporters, and it is true that if it further disables the turbolifts it would only hinder us against it, and take away our only advantage, numbers.
As far as command and engineering personnel, as much as a risk it is I can't start locking all the command and engineering personnel in their quarters, when we need them most of all. The ship has to be fixed, the sequence has to be deactivated, and someone has to be in charge of this ship, and the only people who are capable of doing that are those you just suggested locking away, but as I have already informed Lieutenant Greathouse, marines and security personnel will be sent to critical areas, and if the crew works in pairs I am hoping to minimize the risk, and maximize detection."
He stands from his chair and deactivates the room's viewscreen. "That is all, you are dismissed..." he hesitates... "Doctor, please stay a moment I need to discuss something with you."

After finishing his log Shran turns around from the viewport and looks at the door as the chime sounds. "Enter," he says as a teary eyed woman walks into his officer. "Please sit, Ms. Madison."
The tall slender woman sits in the indicated chair. "I am so sorry about your brother. I wanted to offer my personal condolences and to let you know that he didn't suffer. He was one of my best officers and he will always be remembered as such.
She nods as she looks at the captain. "Fred loved being in Starfleet. He knew it was dangerous, but he didn't care. Even when he was serving as a Junior Officer on the USS Galaxy in the war he always told me that he knew what he was doing was right and he had no regrets."
Shran lowers raises head to the woman in an Andorian sign of respect to mourning. "Your brother's body will be sent back to Mars as per your request, and I've had his personal effects packed up. They are waiting for you in your room on the station.
"Thank you, Captain Shran. Frederich was so proud of being a Martian. He would want to be buried on the soil he was born on.Thank you for everything. My brother always spoke highly of you. He told me that you were young but that you had experience that seemed beyond your years. I can see that." She stood her eyes still bleary as she tried to clear them. "Thank you again, Captain. Good-bye."
"Good-bye, Ms. Madison." He watched the woman walk from his office and felt a pang of guilt and regret. He would never forget the name, Frederich Madison or anyone else he lost under his command. Even one death was unforgivable, at least to him.

The Admiral's face grew impatient. Captain, what is more important, the career of one marine? Or the population of that planet! Your own people! We cannot risk hundreds of lives for the sake of one man's commission.
Shran's antennae twitched as he listened. "With all due respect, Admiral, this situation cannot be so easily frozen over. Lieutenant Greathouse is a good officer. I know there is a way we can resolve this for the benefit of all."
You said yourself that he was willing to face his punishment if it meant that it would help the Andorians.
"There is another way, and my crew will find it. We just need more time."
Captain, the Council is pressing Starfleet for a resolution to this crisis. The evidence is almost indisputable. Your lieutenant, himself, does not even deny that he shot the man. At best that makes him guilty of neglect, and though the purposed punishments may seem harsher than usual they are certainly still within the realm of justifiable. There is not much more we can do to stall. This will come to trial.
"Lieutenant Wesylnes believes that he might be able to..."
It doesn't matter Captain. This issue is not something that will go away with time. We must go forward. Your ordered to be back on Earth in Ten Days time. For what it means, I am sorry. The Admiral hesitates a moment. Good luck, Shran. The screen winks out and all the Andorian can do is look at the blackened screen.

Captain Shran returned from the Counselor's office. His annoyance over his most inexperienced crew-member had simmered by the time the door to his own office closed behind him. If anything he should probably thank the cadet, his untimely interruption reminded Shran that this was his ship, and his responsibility. Talking his decision out with the counselor would only have potentially clouded his initial gut instinct.
He was the Captain of the Ayres, not the Counselor, and certainly not Lieutenant Greathouse. Everything done under his command was his responsibility. Thankfully the court recognized that as well.
The Andorian walks over to his personal viewscreen and punches in the appropriate frequency. After a few seconds and a talk with a secretary he was finally connected to the Councilor from Efros.
Captain, I do hope that this communication means that you have thought over my proposal? The white haired counselor raises his eyebrow. Seeing as how the trial is progressing, I am hardly surprised...
"Yes, I have." His antennae draw back on his head. "And you have talked to Director Hart, and this is an acceptable compromise?"
Director Hart has agreed that it is.
"And Lieutenant Greathouse will be granted a full pardon?"
The Councilor merely nodded.
"Then I accept."

After the Councilor signs off Shran hears his office chime. He deactivates his viewscreen and takes a moment to shake off what he has just done before finally readying himself. "Enter," he says.

"Hello, Counselor." He sits back in his chair. "I was trying to come to a decision about something, but in the end I came to the right choice on my own."

"Before we were interrupted, you had said that you went down to see Lieutenant Greathouse." Shran's antennae arch a bit. "How did you find him? What was your prognosis of him and his situation, both officially and unofficially."

"I didn't console him, just meet him"she says
"He was in good sprites his sister Sandra was their visiting as was Aidan Sir" She says
" I can see he is quite capable of killing, I did not talk long but I don't see him just killing, that's a last resort with him" She pauses
"He's very proud man, he had visitors and Console sessions are private and I felt the vistiors were more important and I did not no if I was allowed to console him" she replies
" But I bet theirs not a member of this crew that don't like him, or would not trust him with their lives" she says
"When I talked with him he didn't act like he was better than me or I was better than him, he treated me like a Friend" she reports "I gave no rank just I was Dr Cindy Hannover CNS of Aryes, and site unseen he treated my like a Friend" she says
"I didn't go over his case but Officially and Unofficially I think hes Innocent" she says
She looks at the Captain "What did you do?"

Shran stands from his chair and walks over the office window. Italy is just coming into view as the distinctive shape jutting out into the Mediterranean begins its slow rotation around the planet below.
After a moment of watching Earth, the Andorian Captain finally speaks, "I have no doubt in my mind that Clyde isn't guilty, but innocence is another matter. Regardless of his intent, all the facts point to him being the one pulling the trigger of that phaser.... He himself admitted it...
"Answer me one more question, Doctor... In your opinion if a child commits an immoral act and finds themselves in serious trouble because of it, which is the better course? As a parent who does not condone their actions do you let your child take the punishment he himself has earned, or despite all that, does the simple nature of parenthood supersede such concerns?" He turns to look at the counselor. "Should a parent stop at nothing to protect their children from those consequences even if they themselves still believe the actions to be wrong? Is it the duty of a parent to protect their child?"

She looks at the Captain "Yes a parent should always protect its child" she says "But mister Greathouse is not a child and you are not his parent " she replies
"You are his Commanding Officer, but you can not take the punishment for him" she says
"This was his doing not yours, Do you think Mister Greathouse would want or let you do anything that jeopardized your career?" she asks
"What did you do?" she asks

Shran's antennae draw back slightly. "I also believe that it is implied that in the failing of the child their is a failing of the parent, perhaps that is where the natural instinct for protection comes from. It is an interior sense of guilt about the failure of parenthood which drives us to so vehemently protect the child, for maybe without the parent's influence the child would truly be blameless..." He pauses as he checks the time.
"What did I do, Doctor? I did what I had to." He adjusts his uniform without thinking as he head toward the door. "If you will excuse me I must be heading down to the planet... I suggest you come and observe the trial tonight, Counselor. All our troubles should finally be at an end.
