Personal history:
Born upon ch’Harvan, he began life in the mines with his parents. However, the Rhiansu had begun an experimental educational program, and were using both lesser class Rhiansu children and Reman children who proved intelligent enough to withstand a harsh educational regime to test it upon. Vraxlis, unnamed at the time was one of the 5 selected from the mines to become a student.
He was taken from the mines at the tender age of 3, and placed into a sterile academic environment where he was presented with something he learned to crave: education. He is given a basic course load of general studies for the first few years, preparing his mind and his aptitudes for future course work. Then, the course work is altered after the first of his evaluation tests. He passes his mathematics and general sciences with ease, but his social studies and history were showing to be weak. His course work was shifted to fit this display of aptitude, and the mathematics was increased in difficulty. The sciences were enhanced, though not yet refined. He soon became enmeshed into the new system, each day he woke to class, broke his fast with study, and returned to the class room for further instruction. After the noon meal, he was then released to continue his studies in refining what was discussed in the class room.
After several years of this routine, he was again given an aptitude test, and his class work was once again refined. But, unlike earlier, the class he was part of was thinned. Those who did not show the same aptitudes were separated out for other purposes. He never saw any of them again. He was not given time to worry about them, as the course load was increased, and labs were beginning to be added. He soon fell into the habit of not discussing his work with even his other class mates, because it was apparent they were all in competition for spots in the next “evolution of classes” which were fewer than those students competing. His motivation was that if he failed to “make the grade” he would have to return to the mines. His instructors made that seem to be the worst failure imaginable, and the mines to be the worst place. Worse even than the cold storage rooms for some of the resources he needed for his labs. It was a place he never wished to go, nor a failure he ever wished to suffer. So, he excelled at what he was asked to, and allowed all other learning to be ignored.
Several times more was his aptitude tested, each time, he passed, and his course work was refined. Each time, the class he was part of thinned even more, until he was the only one who was admitted into the advanced quantum physics and quantum calculus courses. With this, his course work changed again. Instead of having a predominance of theory classes, he was given a lab, and projects to complete. The sessions with an instructor kept to a minimum. As he progressed through this phase, even his reference books were taken from him. He soon became self reliant on his own memory, having the phenomenal capacity of a Reman to draw from. His mind has now been honed so that if he’s seen it once, it’s permanently in his memory for future recall.
His graduation project, the one which would have set him “free” from his preset projects was for the Rhiansu military. The exact specifics have not been released, as he did not successfully complete the project, and won’t speak of it to many while it is under consideration. However, in his attempts to complete this project, he was financed by both the Rhiansu government, and the Reman governments. As he completed phases of the project, he was given extra privileges, so to be able to test bed his theories. The last privilege he was given was the use of an old derelict hulk for the final test bed. However the experiment failed. Fearing this to be the one failure he would never be allowed, he elected to flee, rather than remain, and have his labs taken from him as he was returned to the “drudgery” of the mines, never to be able to expect the achievement of freedom.
With his flight, he became a wanted Reman, and several years were to pass while he fled from all contact with either government. His life changed drastically during this time, as he learned survival skills, and learned that what he’d been educated for was not all ways applicable on the “outside” of a class room. He was a theoretical inventor, not a practical worker. His life was further complicated by the discovery soon after his flight of a stowaway aboard the ship he’d “stolen”. This was a Rhiansu which answered to the name of Lucius.
A tempestuous alliance was established between the two, which mellowed over time into a slightly warmer, less insult riddled working relationship. In this manner he survived along the fringe worlds for a while. However, this too came to an abrupt end, when the Talshi’ar were notified of their location. Who the informant was, will never be known, but it resulted in Lucius being taken back to ch’Rhian for treatment, and Vraxlis barely escaping capture himself. By now, he had heard of the Federation, and that if he were able to successfully make it to one of their bases, he’d be able to apply for diplomatic immunity while things were cleared. He began the next phase of his life worming his way, still with the ship in tow towards such a promised haven, but not expecting success.
Upon reaching SB 234, he requested permission to dock, as a freighter, and was granted this. He left the ship, feeling as if he were barely escaping with his life. The condition of the hulk having deteriorated greatly with the absence of the drug riddled Rhiansu to badger into doing work. He had found a new Talent, one he would never have expected himself to have had – that if he could see the technical specs of a ship, he could make it perform at least to a minimum standard, no matter what the state the actual ship was in.
As he entered the station for the first time, he applied for, and was granted the asylum he so desperately needed to begin working out his personal problems. In order to provide a return for this asylum, he elected to join the ranks of the Federation officers.
