Star Trek 40th Anniversary
DEEP SPACE NINE
Terek Nor. What would be Deep Space 9
By CDR Vanessa Lucifel
¡§It was the best of times; it was the worst of time¡¨. Yet it happened. It was the sixth season of The Next Generation when something happened in the Star Trek Universe that never happened before. A new Star Trek series, dated the same time as TNG, and with a twist, No starship, but on a Starbase. Great, what¡¦s so ground breaking about that? No Gene Roddenberry.
The Berman-Piller team was now in charge of the franchise, and had gathered a decent team of actors/actress together on the premise of a new Starfleet venue, with the Cardassian/Bajoran conflict as a backdrop.
I can say honestly, most Trekkers were not happy at first. The personalities, the Bajorans, what the heck is Odo. If it wasn¡¦t for the Bajoran wormhole, DS9 was just another K7. But it wasn¡¦t, to those who muddled through, they were watching an epic saga. I must admit, it took me all the way to the final episode to notice what I witnessed was a saga. A story about a Starship Commander, who saw his life ripped apart. Who tried to find himself and his son a way to move on, even though deep scars remained. To protect people that look upon Starfleet as another ¡§Conquering Invader¡¨. Who would thought in 7 seasons the climatic ending would bring the Alpha Quadrant closer, then it has ever been.
What made DS9 the most important outpost in the federation? The Bajoran Wormhole, which in fact, and artificial wormhole created by aliens that reside inside it. It also was the sacred temple to the Bajoran people.
DS9 exposed the Dark side of Starfleet, new aliens, and a new Quadrant to explore, not to mention a new Starship to do it in. DS9 explored new realities, past and mirror present. It reintroduced old friends (Worf), and even said goodbye to new ones (Jadzia).
Love would be a continuing theme, most notable the love between Odo, and Kira. Either way, other then Quark, I don¡¦t think anyone escaped cupids arrow. But with all good, there was evil. Gul Dukat, originally I thought as a bit player, would also be the ultimate evil doer in this Saga. The Dominion, the Vorta, and the Jem¡¦Hadar would plunge the Alpha Quadrant into war.
DS9 started on the heels of TNG, and into the beginning of Voyager. It had a very short run on it¡¦s own as far as being on its own. Yet most Trekkers consider it as its own, as it should. But DS9 never really caught all the hype of TNG, and just equaled that of Voyager. There are a few of us (like myself), that found DS9 refreshing. A different point of view as it was. DS9 brought up topics equal to the Original Series. Same sex Relationship, extremist, Terrorism, Vigilantism, Racism, yes all this was covered. Those who said the episodes were boring may have been the same that watched TOS 40 years ago, but hey I¡¦m extremely biased.
By the end we have a Ferengi in Starfleet, the Doctor got the Girl. Odo found love, and chosen to set it free, and an empire in ruins (Cardassian that is). To not re-explore this saga would be a travesty, even though it lacked the Roddenberry touch. Most believe it was because DS9 portrait of a darker federation is why it wasn¡¦t more liked. It¡¦s the things that we saw inside ourselves that actually made DS9 a great saga, for what we saw in the end, was ourselves.
The Satellite of Love:
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE
By Marine Captain Jennifer Morgan
Those of you who watched Mystery Science Theater 3000 know of the Satellite of Love. Aptly named for what you had to have to watch a lot of B-rated Sci-Fi flicks, but in this newsletter, it has a different meaning. I¡¦m talking DS9 folks, the universe natural magnet for the urge to merge.
Despite the fact that this is Star Trek, and theirs aliens in conflict, and lot of Treknobabble, DS9 was full of raging hormones on the loose. While love has touched all the other series, it wasn¡¦t as prevalent, and addictive as on DS9. And keeping with its darker look of the Federation, they rarely had happy endings.
Lets review how the evolution of a bunch of people thrown onto a space station, would turn into one of the best weekly love dramas on television at that time.
Captain Benjamin Sisko: The bitter Commander of DS9 had a rough going when he arrived. His wife killed in the battle of Wolf 359, and the scars left from the battle, he and his son come to DS9 rethinking his role in Starfleet. The next 7 years he would fall for his mirror universe wife, only to die at the hands of the mirror Kira Nerys.
His son was instrumental in arranging him to meet Kassidy Yates, a freighter Captain. Although not happy with this, he would fall in love with her, but within years their love was put through the test when Kassidy was found to be aiding the Marquis. Although she was captured and turned in by Ben, he still had feelings for her, and their romance continued. Although it would be considered a successful relationship, Ben Sisko was of course left the realm of linear existence (hey that¡¦s how they put it), and had joined the Bajoran Prophets. Yates at the time was pregnant with his child.
Kira Nerys and Constable Odo: probably the most famous of relationships in all of Star Trek. This was a natural give in, seeing Odo considered himself an outsider, his only true connection too DS9 was Kira. Their friendship goes back far, yet Odo the staunch stuffy unemotional security director could never show an emotional attachment. Kira meanwhile had quite a love life indeed. She became romantically involved with Vedek Barell, and it was driving Odo bonkers. Unfortunately, Barell would pass away in 2371 after his injuries from an explosion on a Bajoran Transport. From there Kira and Odo would flutter close, but never quite be a couple. It took a Holo-program; Vic Fontaine would bring the two together. With the end of the Dominion war, she was heartbroken when Odo felt compelled to leave her so he could return to the Great Link of his people.
Worf, Jadzia Dax, and Ezri Dax: Worf has history that is known. His arrival on DS9 had caught the attention of Jadzia Dax. Jadzia always had a thing for Klingons, and Worf was no exception. In late 2373 they were engaged, and were married the following year. Although her love was deep for Worf, as was his, the realities of DS9 reared it ugly head in the form of Gul Dukat. She was mortally wounded by the Pah-wraith inhabiting his body.
It would take time for Worf to heal from his lost. The appearance of Ezri Dax didn¡¦t help. In time, Worf would accept Ezri, as he believed Jadzia would want him too, yet Ezri fondness for Dr Bashir would lead to a Romantic relationship.
Garak and Tora Ziyal: The West Side Story had nothing on this one. Garak disgraced Cardassian formally of the Obsiddian Order. Ziyal, daughter of Gul Dukat and Tora Naprem. Is this Romeo, and Juliet? Even Kira wasn¡¦t too crazy about this relationship, yet they had so much in common, and the emotions were there. Once again, the Dark side ended this relationship, in West Side Story style murder of Ziyal, at the hands of Damar. This was one of the most tragic love stories in the whole series if you ask me.
There is more, lots more. DS9 transcended the subject of love; no taboo was not delved into, including Ferengi. We had same sex relationships, intra-species (comparable to interracial), age gaps, paternity, etc¡K
DS9 was not afraid to show the love in almost every conceivable aspect, and I know of two people that enjoyed it (well the Klingon wedding was a bit much). It also was the one glimmer of hope, in a big bad galaxy in the midst of war,

Notes: The Defiant class was initiated in 2365 as a crash program to develop a starship capable of fighting and defeating the Borg. The design incorporated several new weapons concepts, including the Quantum torpedo and phaser pulse cannon. The design and construction teams were briefed to produce a small, tough, simple to build vessel packing the maximum possible level of firepower. A secondary aim of the project was to develop new technologies for implementation in the Sovereign project and possibly into existing starship designs.
The vessel which emerged from the design office was unlike anything ever contemplated by the Federation before. In place of the usual graceful structures, Defiant was a compact, boxy, almost ugly design. The central body is a three deck block with the single deck bridge mounted on the top for four decks in all. The upper deck contains the bridge, engineering support spaces and some crew quarters. Deck two features main engineering, a simple medical bay, more crew quarters and the ships communal mess hall. The third deck includes the transporter room and ships storage and cargo bays and the deuterium fuel tanks. Deck four houses the ships replication storage tanks and systems, the antimatter fuel pods and the small shuttle bay. The single computer core is split between decks two and three.
The navigational deflector is located in a prominent housing on the ships bow, which also contains a probe launcher. Flanking the deflector housing are a pair of torpedo tubes capable of firing both Quantum and photon torpedoes. Aft of this the nacelles are fitted directly to the main hull, flanking the bridge. Each nacelle housing includes four warp coils and two of the ships pulse phaser cannon. The nacelles supporting equipment are contained within a fifth deck which hangs below the normal four; this deck is divided into three levels of crawl way spaces. Aft of the nacelles is the aft torpedo tube, and the ships armament is completed by a turret type phaser array aft of the bridge.
In mid 2367 a Borg attack was launched on the Federation. The Defiant was still not completed, but her crew nevertheless prepared to launch the ship in a desperate attempt to inflict some kind of damage on the attacking vessel. In the event the Borg vessel was destroyed in Earth orbit by the USS Enterprise-D shortly after the Defiant left Space dock to face it.
The Defiant continued to outfit in Space dock for several months, but serious faults in the design surfaced. Overpowered and over gunned for a ship of its size, Defiant experienced serious problems with her structural integrity during warp flight and weapons operation. With the Borg threat now less urgent, the defiant project was shelved in favor of the new Sovereign class which was then under construction.
In 2370 the USS Odyssey was destroyed in a disastrous encounter with the Dominion. The first of the Sovereign class was still months away from completion, so Commander Benjamin Sisko of Deep Space Nine requested that the Defiant be assigned to a mission to contact the Dominion leaders. The ship was equipped with a cloaking device by the Romulans in order to facilitate this mission, in return for Starfleet sharing any intelligence it gained. Despite a disappointing performance on her first mission, when she was quickly overpowered and captured, Defiant proved her worth as a combat vessel over the next few months. The field engineering team under Chief Petty Officer Miles O¡¦Brien has overcome her initial difficulties by re-calibrating and reinforcing the Structural Integrity Field system. Although not an especially fast ship by Starfleet standards, Defiant is far more maneuverable than any vessel of comparable size at both Warp and Impulse speeds. This, combined with her inherent toughness and high level of firepower, makes the ship a formidable fighting force. Despite this, Starfleet has had a difficult time getting approval to put the ship into series production, due in part to the designs perception as having failed originally, but also because of political trepidation within the government over fielding a dedicated warship. Fortunately these problems have now been overcome and the defiant class is finally in full production.
The Defiant herself continued to serve at Deep Space Nine for some time, before being destroyed in late 2375 during the Dominion's recapture of the Chin'Toka system. Fortunately most of the crew was able to escape the ship. The USS Sao Paulo was subsequently renamed to the USS Defiant in honor of this "tough little ship".

Alien Corner: 40th Anniversary edition
BAJORANS
One of the Alpha quadrants more humanoid species, the Bajoran are distinguishable from humans primarily by the appearance of their nose, which is both ridged and slightly more prominent. Female Bajorans have a relatively rapid gestation period of five months, which leads to a very fast vascularisation process.
The Bajoran culture is one of the longest-lived in the alpha quadrant; their civilization flourished over half a million years ago and they first gained interstellar capacity over eight centuries ago. The dominant religion of the planet dates back at least ten thousand years, and is centered around worship of the aliens living within the Bajoran Wormhole - the Bajorans refer to these entities as 'The Prophets' and to the wormhole as the 'Celestial Temple'.
More recently the Bajorans have not fared so well. The Cardassians invaded Bajor in 2328, driving much of the native population from the planet and enslaving the remainder. Bajoran culture suffered greatly during this period, with many living in squalid conditions. Despite this, the Bajorans maintained a small but aggressive resistance effort throughout the occupation and by 2369 the Cardassian government had become frustrated with the militaries inability to crush this movement. Weary of decades of terrorist activity, the Cardassians pulled out of Bajor in this year.
The Bajorans established a provisional government, and despite many difficulties they have been successful in overcoming many of their problems. In 2373 the Bajorans petition for Federation membership was accepted, but at the last moment they withdrew their application for religious reasons. The Bajoran remained politically neutral in the early parts of the war, allowing them to avoid a direct Dominion invasion when Deep Space Nine was captured. When the Federation retook the station, the Bajorans sided with the allies despite some initial trouble with the Romulans.
A major factor in the Bajoran way of life has been their relationship with the wormhole aliens, who the Bajorans think of as gods. Much anguish was caused when the Pagh-Wraiths managed to close the wormhole, but Captain Sisko was successful in using an Orb to reopen it. Sisko also participated in a final battle against the Wraiths in the Bajoran Fire Caves, sealing them into the caves forever.
