From the desk of Captain Jennifer Morgan
Greetings,
Sorry about the delay, but this summer has been hell on computers. Apparently, ours is no stranger to these problems as well. Albeit last weekend we were at a pool party, by the following Monday, the power supply took a dirt nap.
Yet another 550 watt Power supply done for, my ever so reliant “better half”, Commander Vanessa A Lucifel, found a 350 Watt replacement. So much of this issue, is a lot of the last issue.
Next month we plan to do some radical upgrades to the computer as well. Upgrades in memory, a new hard drive, and a radical case to name a few as will also our secondary (laptop) will also be getting upgrades as well. So there will be a skip coming in September as well, please bear with us.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the Starbase database. We are hoping to include some UF Starships as well. Das Balloons is pretty much dead for now, if any of you wish to bring it back, e-mail Cdr Vanessa Lucifel at CadetVYates@aol.com
Finally, I myself may have to leave the newsletter in Commander Lucifels hands for awhile. Recent work related rule changes have me working on weekends. Either way, the newsletter will be done, I have the best staff in the world, and we should thank them one and all.
Thank You
Marine Captain Jennifer Morgan
UF Weekly Editor and Chief.

Notes: Designed to be a smaller and less capable counterpart to the Constitution class, the USS Miranda entered service one year before its larger cousin. There was a very high degree of commonality between the two classes, with the nacelles and most of the primary hull being almost identical.
The smaller size of these ships was largely accounted for by a lower level of habitability for the crew and a reduction in the number of science labs from fourteen to ten. Even so the Miranda's were full Explorer type ships, fully capable of conducting long duration research missions. Their considerable armament also made them an important addition to the defense of the Federation.

Notes: When the Constitution class began to go through a major refit cycle in the 2270s, the Miranda's were similarly upgraded in order to extend their life span. They continued to act as Explorer class units for the next century, forming the backbone of Starfleet throughout this period. In time however, their relatively low cruising speed combined with the gradually increasing distances they had to cover - caused by the expansion of the Federation - began to wear on the ships. Their relative lack of recreational facilities and the cramped quarters began to lead to a marked drop-off in crew performance, and Starfleet considered retiring the class.
Instead, it was decided to use the Miranda design as the basis for a general purpose vessel for use within the body of the Federation. The science labs were removed and replaced with expanded cargo bays and an upgraded weapon fit. The Miranda class was used extensively to patrol the Klingon and Romulan borders, as cargo carriers and particularly as colony transport craft. In fleet actions they acted in support of the larger ships, acting as outer pickets to the fleet. Some vessels were refitted as ammunition ships, using their extra cargo space to carry photon torpedo reloads and phaser components. Others were converted to tankers, carrying supplies of Deuterium and Antimatter. A group of six ships was fitted with modern extra sensor pods and used in the electronic intelligence role. Their ability to look after themselves during a battle made them an excellent choice for these roles.
Today the Miranda's operate in a similar capacity, and although they are not front-line combat units in themselves they are still to be seen operating in major fleet actions in support of the modern vessels. Recently several Miranda class vessels have begun to show signs of serious stress fractures in their hulls; investigations are underway with all ships in the class, and although the results are yet to be announced it is thought that the problem is likely due to the age of the hulls. If so, the Miranda class is likely to be forced into retirement sometime over the next few years.

KTARIANS
Humanoid species found in the Alpha Quadrant and native to the planet Ktaria VII. The Ktarians are recognizable by their distinctive foreheads, which are divided into two large bones like structures, and by their yellow eyes. Ktarians have scales on some parts of their bodies, and at least some Ktarian/Human hybrids have several small horns on their forehead. Ktarian children grow far faster than their Human equivalents.
The Ktarians are notable for an attempt they made to conquer the Federation in 2368. Since they are significantly less powerful militarily, the Ktarians attempted to subvert Starfleet by introducing a game which was highly addictive and which rendered the mind of the user susceptible to suggestion. The Ktarians succeeded in gaining control of the USS Enterprise but before the game could be spread to other Starships their control of the crew was broken by Wesley Crusher and Commander Data.
Despite this attack, the Federation and Ktarians maintained diplomatic and cultural relations. In 2372 Harry Kim met his future fiancé, Libby, while he was visiting a Ktarian music festival.5 Ktaria VII was a popular vacation spot with tourists, as the large Ktarian glaciers offered excellent skiing. Ktaria has also given the Federation some interesting foodstuffs; Ktarian Puff Chocolate is popular with some Federation citizens - the blend of seventeen different chocolates was Counselor Trio’s favorite desert item. Ktarian eggs are large, with mottled red and yellow shells and a green interior, and were a breakfast favorite of Captain Kirk’s girlfriend Antonia in 2284, and Ktarian Merlot is an alcoholic beverage which Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres sometimes enjoyed.
Ktarians bury their dead in a highly ceremonial manner by laying thousands of sacred stones in tombs, each representing a special prayer. On an away mission to the planet a young Chakotay once took one of these stones as a souvenir, and was later horrified to find that he had desecrated the man's resting place by his actions.

Crio's Trivia Corner
===From the Office of Captain Crio Ijoula --- USS Terrasect===
I only had two submissions this week... I have to ask, if you don't like trivia?
==============================
This past week's trivia consisted of two trivia questions, in addition to the Eager-Beaver one.
The first question carries a difficulty level of 4, and comes from the logs of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
=/\= Who is the ONLY person that Captain Picard dreads seeing onboard the USS Enterprise, and will go to great lengths to avoid?
<ANSWER>
Ambasasdor Lwaxana Troi (I will also accept Q for an answer, because he likewise drove Picard nuts)
Correct answer received by:
Lt. Anarra Danrea
Lt. Zandile Rey-Baccus
The second question carries a difficulty level of 3, and also comes from the logs of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
=/\= What technology found on the planet Iconia ends up being destroyed, and who else is interested in this technology?
<ANSWER>
The Gateway technology, and the Romulans were interested in it.
Correct answer received by:
Lt. Anarra Danrea
*Eager-Beaver Question*
Picard's friend, Captain Donald Varley, commanded what Federation starship, and what destroyed that ship?
<ANSWER>
USS Yamato, and it was destroyed when an invasive Iconian computer program overwrote the main computer software.
Correct answer received by:
Lt. Anarra Danrea
Lt. Zandile Rey-Baccus
* The second main question and the eager-beaver question was based on the episode "Contagion" (TNG)
==============================
This week's trivia comes from the logs of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, and carries a difficulty level of 5, and is a tough one pair.
=/\= During the battle over Veridian 3, what was the shield modulation of the USS Enterprise-D, in megahertz (MHz)?
*Eager-Beaver Question*
=/\= What type and vintage was the wine that christened the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B?
==============================
The answer will appear in a later edition of the UF Weekly newsletter, due to the difficulty level. Good luck to everyone.
As always, please email your answers or guesses to chrisdeel@aol.com Please put either "Trivia” or "Crio's Trivia Corner" in the subject line
