Notes: The history of the Excelsior class tends to consist of extremes. Initially fitted with a Transwarp drive and proclaimed "the great experiment", the ship had an ignoble start when its engines failed when it was called into action to prevent the theft of the USS Enterprise. Although this was due to deliberate sabotage, it transpired that the Excelsior had been saved from a major disaster; engineers working to correct the damage discovered a series of flaws in the Transwarp drive which, had it been used, would have caused a nacelle implosion which would have destroyed the ship. The Excelsior spent nearly a full year in Space dock while engineering specialists struggled to repair the problem. Re-launched early in 2286, the ship met with little more success. Although the fatal flaw of the Transwarp drive was repaired, the system was subject to major problems and over the next year it never completed a successful test, much to the embarrassment of Captain Styles and his crew. Finally Starfleet cancelled the Transwarp project altogether, and for a short time the Excelsior faced decommissioning.
There was nothing wrong with the basic engineering of the space frame however, and in all other areas the Excelsior class was still the most advanced ship in Starfleet, and indeed the entire Quadrant, by a considerable margin. In light of this Starfleet rapidly decided to fit the Excelsior class with a more conventional propulsion system. She returned to Space dock for the third time in 2287 to have her hull converted to run with a standard Warp drive. This process went remarkably smoothly, and by the end of the year the Excelsior was in space again. From here the history of the ship leapt from one extreme to the other; from being a costly and embarrassing failure, the Excelsior rapidly built a reputation for outstanding performance and a solid reliability few other designs have matched. Series production commenced at once, and continued unbroken for the next thirty nine years - a record for Federation ship building. The Excelsior herself was assigned to Captain Sulu in 2290 and conducted extensive scientific, exploratory and diplomatic missions under his distinguished command. Today the ships of the Excelsior class continue in service, having undergone many refits and upgrades over the decades.

BORG
Resistance is futile.
The Borg represent one of the most serious known threats to the Federation, and indeed to all species in this galaxy. Little is known about their origins; their combination of biology and technology has been evolving for thousands of centuries. At some point they began to 'network' their minds together into a single species-wide consciousness - the Borg Collective. Unfortunately, this collective mind had little regard for individuality; it embarked on a program to assimilate into itself any species it considered useful, by force if necessary.
There are many variations between Borg drones, optimizing them for their various roles, but most drones share certain common features. Their bodies are covered with a leather-like substance crisscrossed by various tubes and mechanical appliances. One eye - most often the left - is usually replaced with a holographic viewing system, while the right forearm is often replaced with a mechanical appendage. Borg has a built-in replicator unit which can create or modify their mechanical systems as required and synthesize nutrients for their organic systems. Drones carry a supply of nanoprobes which they inject into other life forms; these nanoprobes rapidly begin to construct machinery in the victim, beginning the assimilation process. The Borg relies on an onboard power cell for energy, and this must be recharged periodically. The two features shared by every known Borg are a shield system and a subspace transceiver which keeps the links between the drones intact; it is this network of links which comprises the collective itself.
Borg Nano probes
In 2364 a Borg vessel is known to have passed through both Federation and Romulan space, destroying outposts of both powers. The Borg chose not to attack the Federation at this time, presumably because they where on their way to some other more urgent location. In 2365 the Enterprise-D was flung into system J-25 by Q, where they encountered a Borg vessel. The Borg sent scouts to probe the Enterprise - the first of these was quickly killed, but subsequent drones proved to have a shield device which was immune to phaser fire. The Borg ship subsequently attempted to assimilate the Enterprise, but their cube was quickly disabled by the Federation vessel. However, an away team sent to the Borg ship discovered that the collective was rapidly regenerating its ship. The Enterprise attempted to depart the area before further conflict ensued, but the borg gave chase. As with the drones, further attacks by the Enterprise proved to have no effect on the Borg vessel. Later analysis showed that when the a Borg is attacked the collective mind analyses the destruction of individual drones and creates a defence, which all drones then add to their own systems via their replicators. Their ships operate on similar principles. The Borg vessel nearly destroyed the Enterprise, but Q intervened to save the ship. However, the Borg have displayed a good degree of persistence and since this time have launched two invasions of the Federation - one in 2366 and once in 2373 - causing massive loss of life before being narrowly defeated.
Recently the Borg have encountered the life form they refer to as "Species 8472". Species 8472 proved both to be invulnerable to Borg nanoprobes and to have superior technology. In response to a Borg invasion of their space species 8472 nearly destroyed the Borg; with the help of modified nanoprobes from the USS Voyager the Borg where able to force Species 8472 to disengage and retreat from the conflict.
Voyager had several subsequent encounters with the Borg. On one occasion the Voyager crew was able to spread a computer virus amongst the Borg which enabled drones to rebel against the collective, causing great disruption to the group mind, In 2377 Janeway used a Borg transwarp hub to finally return Voyager to the Alpha Quadrant. The hub and a large section of a Borg Unimatrix was destroyed in the process.

Crio's Trivia Corner
===From the Office of Captain Crio Ijoula --- USS Terrasect===
I only had three submissions this week... I admit I'm kinda hurt by that. At this time, I'd like to encourage EVERYONE to send submissions for trivia.
==============================
I gave everyone at least three weeks for this Level-5 question. It's based off of the second TNG movie.
=/\= What three Enterprise officers set the auto-destruct sequence, and tell me the authorization codes used by each of the officers in question.
<ANSWER>
Part One
The officers involved were Captain Picard, Dr. Crusher, and Lt. Cmdr. Worf. The destruct sequence codes are as follows:
Correct answer received by:
Lt. Anarra Danrea
Fleet Admiral James Harsting
Commander Vanessa Lucifel
Part Two
Picard: Four-Seven-Alpha-Tango
Crusher: Two-Two-Beta-Charlie
Worf: Three-Seven-Gamma-Echo
Correct answer received by:
Fleet Admiral James Harsting
Commander Vanessa Lucifel
*Eager-beaver question*
There is a reference in the movie to Data being "fully functional-programmed in multiple techniques." To what incident in the past was he referring to when answering the Borg Queen's question about how long it had been since he'd used those techniques?
<ANSWER>
Data made reference to having imtimate relations with Lt. Natasha Yar. At the time, the Enterprise crew was affected by a form of virus that is spread by physical contact, and causes symptoms similar to being drunk.
Correct answer received by:
Fleet Admiral James Harsting
Commander Vanessa Lucifel
** (The Eager-Beaver question was taken in part from the episode "The Naked Now" in TNG's first season)
==============================
Okay, let's go a little bit easier now.
My next question is based from the logs of Captain Kathryn Janeway, and has a difficulty level of 4.
=/\= Voyager encountered a Klingon battlecruiser in the Delta Quadrant, who were searching for who or what?
*Eager-Beaver question*
Why did the Klingons destroy their own ship?
==============================
Thank you for supporting Crio's Trivia Corner
The answer will appear in next week's edition of the UF Weekly newsletter. Good luck to everyone.
As always, please email your answers or guesses to chrisdeel@aol.com Please put either "Trivia", or "Crio's Trivia Corner" in the subject line.
