Interview
Ensign Farzon Jaran has been a much needed character on the Expedition. He¡¦s one of the more colorful characters that have joined the United Forces, and a well experienced Simmer. Although this reporter is biased, I figure it was time to introduce the Trill who Thrills.
Cadet V Yates: Welcome Ensign, Have a seat.
Farzon Jaran: ::sits down:: thanks
Cadet V Yates: You have made quite an impact on the Expedition since you've joined. Is this a characteristic of Farzons personality?
Farzon Jaran: I'd like to think so. I wasn't really aware that my coming here made such an "impact". I just do what I do.
Cadet V Yates: And you do it well. Is Engineering one of your great post to have?
Farzon Jaran: I usually prefer science, but engineering has a lot in common with it. You have to know what you are doing. Plus it's always fun to save the ship.
Cadet V Yates: Yes, you definitely know what your doing. Did you follow alot of Star Trek Characters to develop this skill, or is it natural?
Farzon Jaran: Well, engineering talent runs in the family. And yes, I have studied many star trek episodes, but it's attention to detail that makes a great engineer
Cadet V Yates: I agree there, but Farzon is such a colorful Character. Is this an extension of yourself, or was he suppose to be so charming.
Farzon Jaran: Well, of course Farzon is part of who I am. All my charachters are to some extent. Farzon is more of my charming, comedic side. He's always ready to crack a joke.
Cadet V Yates: I must admit, he is witty, and seems to have been a hit with the crew. Any one member on the Expedition has Farzon bonded with?
Farzon Jaran: Well, I don't like to say anything for certain, but Farzon has found himself to a certain figher pilot that goes by the name of Ashley Morgan.
Cadet V Yates: Oh, making friends so early. Now that your on your first mission, any thoughts about what you have seen so far?
Farzon Jaran: I like what I've seen so far. It's been fun. I hope the missions ahead are exciting.
Cadet V Yates: I'm assured you will have your hands busy. OK Favorite Star Trek Generation?
Farzon Jaran: Star Trek, The Next Generation. Hands down the best.
Cadet V Yates: OK, favorite Character overall?
Farzon Jaran: That's a tough one...
Farzon Jaran: I'd have to go with Data. He's the man.
Cadet V Yates: Good pick, but I got a bonus question for you cause I trust you. Favorite Starship Design?
Farzon Jaran: Easy. Galaxy class.
Cadet V Yates: ::Laughs:: You are TRULY, the Next Generation of Trekkers. Thank you Ensign.
Farzon Jaran: ::shakes her hand:: Thank you.

Notes : The Saber class was part of Starfleets modernization program of the 2340's. They were designed to be a frigate counterpart to the Steamrunner class starship; much smaller, easier to build and hence considerably more numerous. The designers brought in many measures to ensure that the Saber class would be easy to build; like the much earlier Oberth class science vessels the Saber's design is highly modular in nature, allowing ten thousand ton sections to be constructed in small shipyards before final assembly in a larger facility. One requirement was for the Saber's to have a science and exploration capacity equal to 85% that of a Steamrunner class along with equal cruise and maximum speeds - a measure intended to allow the vessels to work together in co-ordinated operations. This proved an exceptionally difficult target to meet in a hull with only two thirds of the volume of a Steamrunner; the designers were eventually forced to cut the torpedo armament of the Saber class from the original two triple-fire torpedo tubes to a single mono-fire tube and reduce the load carried from 90 to 30 torpedoes. The six type VII phaser arrays were at first to be reduced to only four, but in the event a reduction in the ships accommodation levels allowed a single Type VIII emitter to be worked into the leading edge of the saucer section. This brought the overall phaser power to some 91% of the initial planned phaser capacity. The competition for internal volume also forced a reduction in the size of the warp core, and as a result the Saber can only manage a top speed of Warp 9.2 compared to the Steamrunner's Warp 9.5.
The original specifications of the Saber called for a crew of 130, but increased automation of the engineering systems allowed this to be cut to 118 and then 102. Conditions for the crew are quite poor by the standards of the Steamrunner or Akira classes; crew quarters average 30 square metres and there are no holodecks. In addition, there are no personal replicator stations in crew quarters - instead three mess areas are provided with replicator systems for the whole crew. The Saber's have proved reasonably successful in service, although the relatively poor living conditions has led to a shorter than expected average mission duration. Like the larger Akira and Steamrunner classes, Saber's have largely served in the frontier regions and they have been an uncommon sight at the heart of the Federation. This has changed over the last three years, when many of the Saber class have been relocated near the core as part of Starfleets build-up of forces against the Dominion. Sabers featured heavily during the recent Borg incursion4, where many of the ships involved in the Typhon and Earth battles were destroyed or severely damaged.
Comments
Another of the new First Contact designs, we never get a really good close look at the Saber in the film - the image on attached to this entry is from the "Star Trek The next Generation Sketch Book". According to the diagram in the new Encyclopedia (page 470), the Saber class are very small - about the size of the saucer section of the original Constitution class. I've pegged them as being light scout ships; designed to support ships such as the Steamrunner and Akira in battle, or to operate on their own in reasonably non-threatening environments. Since we don't see an awful lot of smaller ships on Trek, I've suggested that Starfleet suffered problems with the Saber when they tried to cram too much into her.
The Sabers suffered pretty heavily in First Contact - as did most of the other designs present, of course! Given their apparent age - based on the relatively low NCC numbers - and size I don't think they are really designed for mass battle tactics and that could be an excuse as to why we've seen relatively little of them since First Contact. In truth, I think the design is boring compared to the Akira and Steamrunner, and the creators seem to be using these ships more because of the generally positive fan reaction to them

NAUSICAANS
A Bad hair day.
Humanoid species native to the Beta Quadrant. The Nausicaans are large people renowned for their lack of subtlety and surly, ill-tempered manner. Nausicaan pirates were a problem for Earth cargo ships in the 2150s, since they carried energy shielding which made them highly resistant to the plasma cannon most of the Earth ships carried. The advent of the NX class helped to even things up somewhat. In 2371 a group of Nausicaans used an ultrasonic generator to break in rob central museum of Remmil VI by breaking down one of the walls. They are a common choice as bodyguards or hired muscle - FCA liquidator Brunt used two Nausicaans as bodyguards in 2372 when he investigated a labour union set up by employees of Quark. The Nausicaans severely beat Quark in an unsuccessful attempt to force Rom to shut down the union.
In 2327 the newly graduated Ensign Picard and two of his friends became involved in a fight at a gambling establishment on Starbase Earhart after a Nausicaan cheated during a game of Dom Jot. One of the Nausicaans stabbed Picard through the heart, severely injuring him and necessitating an artificial replacement organ.
Lets Party.
In 2374 Quark made 200 bars of gold pressed latinum by selling Denevan crystals to a Nausicaan entrepreneur.

Crio's Trivia Corner
Reprint from 7-9-2006
===From the Office of Captain Crio Ijoula --- USS Terrasect===
==============================
For this next question, I'm going to extend the time frame for answering by the next issue, due to the difficulty level.
This question carries a difficulty level of 5, and is based on one of the movies.
<Star Trek: First Contact>
=/\= What three Enterprise officers set the auto-destruct sequence, and tell me the authorization codes used by each of the officers in question.
*Eager-beaver question*
There is a reference in the movie to Data being "fully functional-programmed in multiple techniques." To what incident in the past was he referring to when answering the Borg Queen's question about how long it had been since he'd used those techniques?
The winners will be posted in the next issue.
==============================
Thank you for supporting Crio's Trivia Corner
The answer will appear in next week's edition of the UF Weekly newsletter. Good luck to everyone.
As always, please email your answers or guesses to chrisdeel@aol.com Please put either "Trivia", or "Crio's Trivia Corner" in the subject line.
