STAR TREK XI
J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce and direct the next Star Trek feature, according to today's Daily Variety and sources at Paramount Pictures. There is no title as yet for the new movie, but it will be the eleventh in the franchise. (Until a title is selected, we will usually refer to the project as simply "Star Trek XI.")
Although there isn't an official Paramount press release announcing the movie, it is a confirmed project under development with a 2008 release date targeted. Word about the Abrams project surfaced this morning in the daily trade paper. He will be writing the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who penned "M:i:III." STARTREK.COM will keep you up to date on all official statements as they are released.
The proposed story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission in space.
Abrams' producing partners from Lost, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, are cited as being producers on "Trek XI." This project is separate from the previously rumored script developed by Eric Jendresen and overseen by Rick Berman. The former Star Trek producer is not involved in this project.
This announcement is exciting news, and we look forward to following developments on this project every step of the way!

From the Editors Desk:
We at the UF Weekly have been trying to improve the publication. Over this time you have notice new articles like Crio’s Corner, Top Posters, and This weeks Recruiters.
Well in all this improving, we haven’t done an interview in quite awhile. With Vanessa getting some down time, I’m hoping someone can fill in for her every so often. Although it seems we have a lot on the staff, this is still a two women operation to put this newsletter out.
We all have to contribute to keep the Best newsletter in the Federation as current, and fresh as possible.
Thank you

From the Desk of Fleet Admiral Harsting:
Greetings everyone!
It has been a busy time as of late on our website, with new additions, features, as well as the site being completely overhauled.
Here are a list of the new features that we have added to our website and boards since the beginning of the year. Some you may have been made aware of by previous editions of the Weekly, however, I feel it is prudent to keep all of our members aware of our many site features.
Research & Development Submission Forms: We decided to add a submission form to outline information needed for ship submissions. Many of our members are very creative, and I personally like to see our members being able to contribute to the technology of our group. You can submit ideas for gear, for new ship classes, or even fighters. These forms are listed under "Research & Development" on our main menu. I highly encourage any person with an idea to submit it, though all ideas may not be accepted as is.
Chat Room Listings: We added a chat room listing for all official United Forces chats in two places. The first one, admittedly created for guests, gives links to our Recruit Room and Lounge. The second chat room listing is located on the Message Boards, and is accessible by members only. It's location is the first board under the "Live Sim" Catagory. This particular page houses links to all official United Forces Sim Chat Rooms. Any Commanding Officers, if the room listing for your sim is incorrect, please contact me.
UF Name Bar: One of our most recent updates was our name bar, added just below the logo at the top of the screen. It is only cosmetic at this point, however, it is meant to keep track of how many times you visited the site for your own personal information. This feature was added as a test for more advanced features later on.
Color Scheme Customization: Members are now able to choose from three color schemes for the website that can be changed at the users will. Currently we have our Default Skin, Starfield Skin, LCARS, and Message Board Skin.
Future upgrades that are currently in the works are:
Political Maps: This will give a face to the Star Trek Galaxy that we currently use. I'm spending a lot of time on it, trying to blend that of real Star Charts and canon Star Trek into one map. Difficult, but in the end I hope worth it.
Additional Color Schemes.
If anyone has any ideas to make things better on our site, please feel free to contact me, Kenneith Basal, or run the idea by Jenina Weslynes. Between the three of us most of the ideas and concepts on our site have been born. However, I would like to see our site become more than it currently is. And we can only do that with your help.
Thank you all for your time.

Cardassians
Easily recognizable by their pale grey skin and heavily ridged neck, the Cardassians are evolved from reptilian ancestors. They prefer a darker more humid environment than Human beings, although they can tolerate Human living standards if necessary.
Cardassian history tends to consist of extremes; once a peaceful and spiritual people, their planet's poor resources proved unable to support their expanding population and starvation and disease became rampant. Millions of deaths resulted, leading to a general breakdown in the government. The military forces of the planet staged a take-over and launched several wars against their neighbours in order to secure new resources. Although further millions where lost in these wars, the military government did succeed in stabilizing the situation on Cardassia.
In 2347 the Cardassians invaded Setlik III, believing it to be a base to be used in an invasion of their own territory by the Federation. A prolonged period of tension resulted. In 2355 the Federation dispatched a Constellation class starship in an attempt to make peace, but the Cardassians rejected the offer and forced the ship to flee. Hostilities briefly flared again in 2367 when Captain Maxwell launched unauthorised attacks on several Cardassian ships, but Captain Picard was able to stabilise the situation.
In 2372 a civilian uprising deposed the military government. Suspecting Dominion involvement in the coup, the Klingons launched an invasion of Cardassia; the Federation opposed this action and was successful in forcing the Klingons to halt their advance into Cardassia, although this destroyed the Federation-Klingon alliance and resulted in a short period of hostilities between those two powers. The Federation shipped considerable aid to the devastated Cardassian government.
Humiliated by having to rely on charity from a former enemy after a relatively quick and easy defeat at the hands of the Klingons, Gul Dukat led a Dominion take-over of Cardassia and was installed as ruler of the region in 2373. Cardassian forces subsequently fought alongside the Jem'Hadar in the Dominion War, but this alliance was never a very strong one. When Gul Dukat was captured by the Federation during the retaking of Deep Space Nine, leadership fell to Damar. Damar was less than enamoured with his Dominion masters, a situation made worse when the Breen joined the Dominion. Relations continued to sour, to the point where Damar attempted to break away from Dominion rule.
In reprisal the Dominion destroyed a Cardassian city, hoping to terrorize the homeworld into submission. When news reached the front lines the Cardassian fleet turned on the Dominion en masse, helping to inflict a devastating defeat upon them. In retaliation the Founders ordered the Jem'Hadar to murder as many Cardassian citizens as possible, and in the final hours of the war Cardassia Prime was devastated.
In the aftermath of the war the Cardassians are faced with a colossal task in rebuilding their shattered Union. It remains to be seen whether they will be able to form a more civilized government in the process.
Board news
The last count was taken at 4:30 pm, on April 29, 2006. This week’s count was taken at 2:00 pm, May 6, 2006. When doing the counts I leave out the board Sims for a counting of sim placement based on the fact this is how they sim. And would be unfair to the live Sims.
The total number of new postings increased from 7,712 to 7,833. For a total increase of 121 postings of the live Sims and general areas.
Ship counts
These are the live Sim Ship log count
This has been one quiet week on the boards. With many ships in space dock, on shore leave, or having some ceremonies on board, it’s no coincidence. The Pegasus wins again, but next week lets give them a run for the money!

STAR TREK: The VCR
Stardate 12:00
Captain Kirk: Captain's log, Stardate 7412.6... hello? The red light still isn't going on. Testing, 1-2-3-4. Chekov, it's not recording.
Chekov: I know, Keptin. Perhaps a negative function with the clock-timer.
Uhura: Captain, I'm getting indications of a Klingon presence.
Kirk: Mr. Spock?
Spock: I confirm at least six Imperial Klingon warships, Captain, and heading toward our position at Warp 7.
Kirk: No, the Captain's log. Why won't it record?
Spock: Might I suggest, Captain, that we first remove ourselves to a more secure sector and then address the matter of your log? That would be the...logical approach.
Kirk: There's nothing logical about this instruction manual. Chekov?
Chekov: Keptin?
Kirk: Try this. "With the Rec-On day flashing, press the 5 key."
Chekov: I did already, Keptin. Still negative function.
Sulu: Captain, I'm having difficulty holding course.
Kirk: Shut down engines. Chekov, "Press the number for the day. For Sunday, press the 1 key, for Monday, the 2 key, and so on."
Chekov: Affirmative, Keptin. Still negative function. Perhaps ve should go back to page 15, vere it said to press Rec-Off time and enter two digits for the hour.
Spock: Captain, the Klingons are arming their photon torpedoes.
Kirk: Engineering.
Scotty: Aye, Captain?
Kirk: Mr. Scott, we've got a malfunction in the log. We're going to need full deflector power while we get it fixed.
Scotty: I canna guarantee it, Captain. The systems are overloaded as it is.
Chekov: Keptin, the flashing 12:00 disappeared!
Kirk: Good work, Chekov!
Chekov: Den it came right back.
Kirk: Damn it. Analysis, Mr. Spock.
Spock: It would appear, Captain, that this instruction manual that you and Mr.Chekov have been attempting to decipher was written in Taiwan.
Kirk: Taiwan?
Spock: A small island in the Pacific Rim Sector, formerly inhabited by a determined people who believed that the adductor muscles in giant clams, Tridacna gigas, conferred sexual potency. In the later twentieth century, they became purveyors of early video equipment to what was then the United States. They were able to successfully emasculate the entire U.S. male population by means of impenetrable instruction manuals. It was this that eventually led to the Great Conflict.
Kirk: But this is 7412.6. How did a Taiwanese instruction manual get aboard the Enterprise?
Spock: It is possible that a Taiwanese computer virus was able to infiltrate Star Fleet Instruction Manual Command and subtly alter the books so that not even university-trained humans could understand them.
Kirk: It's diabolical.
Spock: On the contrary, it is perfectly logical. Their strategy was based on an ancient form of Oriental persuasion known as water torture. In this case, instead of water a digital rendering of the hour of twelve o'clock is flashed repeatedly and will not disappear until the unit is correctly programmed.
Kirk: And for that you need a manual you can understand.
Spock: Precisely. Unless...
Kirk: Spit it out, Spock.
Spock: You have Star Log Plus. A small device that permitted the Americans to bypass the instruction manuals and program their units so that they would not end up with six hours of electronic snow instead of "Masterpiece Theater" or, more likely, "American Gladiators."
Kirk: Could you make one these things, Spock?
Spock: It would take more than the one minute and twenty seconds that we have until we are within range of Klingon weapons.
Dr. McCoy: Jim, you know I hate to agree with Spock, but he's right. We've got to get out of here. There are hundreds of people on this ship, young people, with homes and families and futures, and pets-- little hamsters on treadmills, Jim. You can't sacrifice them just because you can't figure out how to program your damn log!
Kirk: I know my responsibilities, Bones. Spock, would it be possible to beam the flashing 12:00 into the Klingons' control panel?
Spock: Theoretically, yes.
Kirk: Do it.
Uhura: Captain, I'm picking up a Klingon transmission.
Kirk: Put it on screen.
Klingons: QI'yaH, majegh!
Kirk: Translation, Spock.
Spock: It appears to have worked, Captain. They are surrendering.
Kirk: Take us home, Mr. Sulu. Mr. Chekov, try pressing the OTR button twice.
