She got to the Captain's office and rang the chime and waited for permission to enter.

He got off the TL, walking to Addison's office he tied back his hair. He did this to show respect. Seeing another at the door he nodded to her. He would wait here until she was finished with speaking to the Captain.

She saw a man with long hair tied back dressed in civilian clothing He nodded to her and she nodded back to him. She twisted the ring around her little finger and wondered if this was some kind of test the Captain was giving.

Addison had enough of dress uniforms. He was now in standard uniform and it felt good. He had finally decided to get down to ship's business. He heard the alert knowing his counselor has been ordered to report. "Pallaton Enter." He said and began to look over his personnel records.

Sinopa hearing the captain call for him, looked at the woman and shrugged. He entered his office, "Sinopa Pallaton as you requested", to most he would look as if standing at attention when in reality he was standing as he taught to stand before an elder. He eyes meeting the other mans eyes.

I'm going to make this short and sweet. He laid his hands on his desk. I don't know how you fell on this ship, but this is a military ship. Therefore additional to your duties you will be studying for the Imperial Star Naval officer's exam. You will take it in two weeks and I shall give it to you personally. I believe you are capable of it. Once completed I can then give you a field commission of Ensign. Until then you will be wearing a Midshipman's uniform. I do not want to see you out of uniform again. Are we clear?

There was a flash of anger, no it was rage that showed in his eyes and would bore into the soul of the other. He defeated the urge to put this man against the wall.
"How I fell on this ship? I suppose you would think it luck, it was the action of a fool who drunk too much one week end. Woke up to find he made a mistake. One that would last 3 years to this day and hour."
"Your own people gave me the right to be a civilian." he shrugged. "Now, I see the truth, you can force me to wear your clothing, to take your test. But what lies here," he took his closed hand and tapped his heart. "can not be forced. Now we both should be clear on how we feel to each other, and our worlds."
There was no challenge, no implied or explicit threat, rather a simple statement on what was felt and needed to be said. Sinopa figured this would probably cause a problem, but he was descended from the Blackfoot who was created on this world, he was a member of the first tribe. He would speak the truth and then accept what would happen.

I mean no disrespect to you or whatever culture you come from, He paused a moment. But when you signed your name to Imperial service that comes first. The uniform just doesn't represent some indentured servitude. What it represents is the might of the Empire. If you think you are being forced to do anything then we can drop you off at the same starbase we pick our doctor up, but you are on the flagship of the fleet. If you don't know and respect the history that goes with this ships name then maybe you should find a posting that you can quietly be left alone. This is the Defiant where the best of the best are posted. Either you are in that group or not. I will leave that up to you to decide.

His eyes burned into this man and he remembered the words of an elder before he left for Terra Prime and in remembering those words he knew his path.
"Disrespect is seen and felt differently by different people. I see none here. Unless you did. I have and will continue to speak only the truth as I see it. I don't seek to tell you want you want to hear or what your military wants to hear."
"I see your uniform not as indentured servitude since I brought it to my table. But, it does not and will not hold the same meaning to me as it does to you. For you it was a prize to have and to keep close to your heart. To have a symbol of what you call might. And that, is as it should be. For me it is not."
"You can do with me as you wish since my signature on that paper gives you that right. I accept that, and have made peace with the old man. So it is in your hands if I remain or not."
"As to the history of this ship, I don't know it, and therefore can not respect it. But I will cause it no harm. I was not born on your world. My ancestors were, before the Preservers took them to my world."
"And to my posting. I was being sent elsewhere until I was told at the last moment to come here. So I am here. I will live up to the commitment I made when I signed that paper. I am, Blackfoot, my word is who I am."
"As for the being among the best. I know I am and have always been the best at what I choose or have to do. Question is, who else is the best they can be at any given time."
"What is it your people say, the ball is in your court. I will do as you have asked but now YOU know what lies in my heart and mind. SO it is your choice if I stay or not."

She cracks her neck as she waits for the Captain to finish his meeting. She wonder if she could go to the bar and then come back. A nice stiff drink would be nice.

Then If I must I will educate you, He explained. Your planet may not be the crown world, but your people were still enslaved as the rest of us were by the Klingons. The man you just met today made it possible for your world to be independent. There were many who would have Terra Prime gobble you, your culture and your people up. It was the captain of this ship that realized the wisdom of allowing worlds to progress as they would in their way as part of the empire and not slaves to it. So I understand what is in your heart, but Morris Blackledge understood what was in everyone's heart. I've explained what is expected of you to that end. If comply with my orders you will stay if you do not you will go. I'm giving you that choice because anyone here should be here because they want it bad enough. If that is not in your heart you will not survive whether I let you stay or not.

He was beginning to have some respect for this one. And saw in him something he didn't see in a long time.
"My world may not as you say be the crown world, and by your standards and judgments primitive. And while the Klingon's came to our world and used it and us for their purposes it was minimal. We endured. As for those in your world wanting to gobble up my world, people and culture it will be as the old man has seen in the dimness before our birth."
"Blackledge has done what he knew had to be done. And that is greatness in practice. It is that which inspires and which I can respect."
"Exactly, what lies in my heart will determine the outcome. And the days of my life. I told you, I signed the paper and will do what I have to, to keep my word, even when it was given when drunk."
He stood there for moment, "I will do as you ask my word as given already, and placed on the paper as you pointed out."

"I will note your protest and keep abreast of your progress." He knew that to the counselor he was asking a lot, but he would no in time. "You are dismissed, and good luck."

He looked at him and nodded. Then walked out. His anger was still there but the rage was absent. He should have listened to the Elders and stayed on his world. He walked by the woman quickly.
