Marc saluted the Chief Engineer. Captain, I was showing around the newest addition to our staff. He motioned to Nemi. I know it is abnormal, but I felt that with all this downtime, it might give both she and I a chance to become better acquainted with the ship and its department heads. Oh and excuse my lack of manners. Lieutenant Xenakis, Captain Bradley, and Captain this is Lieutenant Xenakis, our new Counselor.

"Pleased to meet you captain." Engineering had a wholly different feel to it. Whereas on the Marine Deck there was a constant edge of expectation that kept everyone on alert, here the energy was no less, but instead of constraint, it flowed easily. She wondered if that was due to the officer in charge or if it was a mark of engineering personnel in general.
"I'm afraid I don't have any boldly incisive questions for you. Engineering was my academic weak point."

Please to meet you Lieutenant. Jack smiled at her inference, since most officers shied away from Engineering. I won't bore you with technical jargon. I think of Engineering as the heart of the ship. If it shuts down the ship dies. Chief Engineer is a 24/7 position because just like a biological body you are always fighting time. The ship is being worn down as it moves through space. Its complex systems must always be running to perfection, but you never quite get there. I suppose like most Engineers I think of the ship as more mine than the Colonel. His job is to protect its crew, my job is to protect it. It is a protector and commanders sharp sword.

"Captain, if any of my instructors had been so poetically and passionately descriptive, my career in Starfleet might have turned out differently." She smiled. "I deal with the abstract, feelings, perception. In a way you do too. The technical seems a lot less daunting when put in those terms."

She's right, you can sign me up. He said with a smile. Seriously, I think I took your unit for granted Captain but never again. Do engineers go on 'standby also?

We don't really go on 'standby' as the infantry and fighters do. He said after taking a sip of soup. Its all about alert status with us. Right now, we are at 'green'. If it were yellow alert status, we would have all non essential personnel, he smiles. Like yourselves ejected. We would also have teams manning the torpedo tubes and in battle readiness. At red alert status then we would be locking down engineering and I would be communicating with the bridge on defense status.

That was very informative, I don't know about the counselor here, but since I've only stayed hidden on the Hangar deck or infantry deck I learned a l lot more about ship operations. On that note, we need to get out of your hair. He looked down at Nemi who was still looking around Engineering having taken in Jacks information.

"This is my first shipboard assignment. A ship might need many engineers, but only one counselor is required. I had to wait for an opening. I'm not unhappy about the delay however, I learned quite a bit doing psyche evaluations for the Judge Advocate General's office. Had I been assigned earlier I might not have had the experience to be considered for a ship like Tarawa." She waved. "Thank you for the tour, Captain, it looks like my bus is about ready to leave." Nemi hurried after Lassiter. "Where to next?"

Jack watched her leave, but she had peaked is interest. Especially about working for JAG. He fired out a message to her that his door was always open and that he'd like to compare 'war stories' from both their pre-assignment days.

The doors open to engineering and she walks in leading the way. She spots Winslow at the Master system control display and walks over to him. Sargent Winslow I have some orders from the Colonel. She hands him the PADD.

He turns to Lt. Saris and takes he PADD. And hello to you to Lt. Saris . He takes the PADD and reads it. Ah so theses are the berks that are in aggro for starting the brawl in five forward?

Aleg "escorted" the prisoners in behind Saris and waited to see what was going to happen. Engineering instead of the brig? This had to be something good.

Uh right... Not exactly sure what the Sargent meant by berks and aggro. As you can see from the Colonels orders he wants you to replicate four 20th century manual tooth brushes and a pale of warm soapy water and I am to leave them in your charge. Then they are to use the tooth brushes to clean main engineering until it sparkles. Once they get your approval that it is clean they are released back to their regular duties. Is that clear Sargent?
