Andy had only been back to Parris Island a few months, but it felt like home. He got to find out where some of his friends had gone. He had a meeting with the base commander, but he decided to add that to his morning run. He couldn’t ‘function unless had pounded a couple miles of pavement in the morning. All those memories demanded it. He arrived promptly after a quick shower and change into standard uniform.
The base commander was a Colonel Reed Brown. He was Andy’s group commander before he was recruited and reassigned to special ops. He had seen him come out of basic as a pup and become the soldier that he was today. Andy stood and gave the Colonel a salute. He returned the salute and motioned him to sit down.
“Shackleford,” Brown said. “I’ll get straight to it. Command wants you to resume active duty.”
“With all due respect sir,” Andy returned. “I haven’t even been cleared by psy.”
“Actually,” He answered as he produced a file. “The counselor says you still have to resume regular visits between missions but you are fit for duty.”
“Sir,” Andy said seriously. “After what happened on Bravo 85339, I will not return to spec ops work. I don’t have the stomach for it anymore.”
“Shackleford,” He said in a commanding voice. “What happened on that mission is not your fault. They were wrong and you did as ordered.”
“Maybe,” Andy responded. “But sir you tell me: If you had to kill your entire team on orders would you have much faith that you wouldn’t have to do it again?”
“Faith no,” He said. “Hope yes. I knew you might not be willing to do special operations work again right away. I used whatever strings I have to pull to get you a different assignment. You’ll go back on active duty alright, but I have gotten you assigned to Pegasus. They’ll have your full file since I’m not sending them a ‘head case’ without full knowledge of what they are getting into. However because of your bravery on the last mission and your commitment to duty and honor I have the honor of promoting you to 2nd Lieutenant.” The Colonel hands him a box with his rank pin in it. “Now get out of here Lieutenant, your runabout leaves in thirty minutes.”
And with that Andy was no longer assigned to Parris Island. He ran to his barracks to get his gear. He’d never been assigned to a ship before. He was trained for it, but the corps thought he had better talents. Maybe this would be a new start and not a repeat of old mistakes.
