James Archimedes Harsting was born on Stardate 14661.05 (Aug 30, 2337) to two Starfleet Officers aboard the Excelsior Class NCC 62043 USS Melbourne, ones Lt. Patricia Tryst-Harsting and Lt. Commander Jonathan James Harsting.
Two months after Jim turned 2 years old, his mother was transferred to the USS Enterprise C, which did not accept family members per Captain Rachel Garret's regulations. She was granted Chief Engineer Status aboard the Enterprise, and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. Here she served for two years before the first tragedy of Jim’s life.
On Stardate 21625.3, The USS Enterprise C was lost with all hands while protecting a Klingon Outpost from a Romulan Attack. Though the mission ended with the destruction of the Enterprise, Starfleet Awarded Jim’s father with his mother’s commendations. Since Jim was merely four years old, as well as the nature of his parents career, he has but few memories of his mother.
Due to this tragedy, Commander Jon Harsting requested transfer to Earth, and was posted as Project Manager of the Nebula Project at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. Though Jon was not an engineer, he served as the coordinator for an already stricken project. The Nebula Project was supposed to be completed a full two years prior, and Starfleet was tired of Engineers bickering over failure of the project.
When Jon came aboard the Nebula Project, the projected launch time of the USS Nebula was set at 2363, though the initial timeline was set for 2354. Under the previous administration, the project had fallen nine years behind. The purpose of the Nebula Project was paramount because many new technologies were being created for the Nebula Class, as it was a test bed for many new technologies that would make up Starfleet’s next generation Heavy Cruiser, the Galaxy Class.
Jon Harsting heavily restructured the workload on the Nebula Project, and began overseeing many key components himself. This was the time that Jim’s interest of engineering began to take off, and at the age of 7, Jim took an elementary engineering class, and for a class project, built a model of the original Phoenix Warp core. From then on, his father knew the boy would take after his mother. And in this, Jon encouraged his son to go for what he wanted.
At the Age of 16, Jim had published his first Engineering Thesis, regarding Warp Engine efficency. This thesis, revolutionary coming from some one so young, entailed going against traditional thought, in making warp fields more compact to increase the efficiency and speed of the vessel. However, this theory would not be realized until the late 2360s in the Intrepid and Sovereign Class vessels, as the hull geometry of the era at the level of technology was not actually feasible in the least.
Two years later, when Jim was 18, he wrote another thesis on Verteron Particle Acceleration, which in practice would be able to increase efficiency of navigational array systems. However, the technology for this wouldn't be developed for almost another 25 years. Starfleet Academy took this publication and included it in the Advanced Engineering courses.
Instead of joining Starfleet Academy, Jim worked on Utopia Planitia with the Starfleet Junior Corps of Engineers, where he had intended to join Starfleet as a NCO. He studied as a Journeyman under a few Engineers for the next two years, immersing himself in ship design and engineering.
Just before Jim's 19th Birthday, he started designing a new class of Starship after being inspired by seeing his fathers work on the Nebula Project and working with many Ship Designers on the Nebula Project. This fairly advanced ship, which wouldn't find reality for nearly 28 years, was dubbed the "Terrasect Class".
During this time Jim worked heavily with his father with every declassified item he could get his hands on. Jim often would include his father in on his work, and because of this (or so Jon said), he had some major breakthroughs which allowed the Nebula Project to be completed in Mid March of 2355, only 3.5 months after the original planning.
Due to this ‘miracle’ (as the Commander in Chief of the Earth Fleet dubbed it), Jon was promoted to the rank of Captain, and offered Command of the Wyoming. Jon accepted it, after nearly 11 years of being stationed at Utopia Planitia.
At the same time that Jon Harsting transferred, Jim applied for Starfleet Academy after his father had badgered him to do so for two years. He had been relucant to actually join the academy, as mentioned before, having intended to join Starfleet as an Non-Commissioned Officer.
Jim also took multiple courses in Command, Tactical Systems, as well as Helm and other related systems, believing the best way to be an engineer is to understand as many facets of a vessel as possible. He also continued his work on creating the Terrasect Class, as well as formulating multiple advanced Warp Core Designs. One of these Designs were noticed by Dr. Leah Brahms, who took the base work after conferring with Jim, and using it as the basis for the Galaxy Class Warp Core.
Upon his Graduation in 2361, he was posted to the Utopia Planitia Shipyards (which felt like home for him after living there for 11 years prior), where he was requested to be on the design team for the Warp Systems in the Galaxy Project by Dr. Brahms. During this time, he helped fix a major problem with the warp fields causing subspace stress on the space-frame.
In 2364, after the completion of the Galaxy Project, Jim was promoted to Lt. Junior Grade, and transferred to the Daystrom Institute Starfleet Department, where he was a senior member of the Quantum Theory Department. During his tenure here, he helped develop a prototype Quantum Torpedo as part of the Sovereign Project, which also involved technology that would later be dubbed Ablative Armour.
Jim accepted a transfer to the USS Potempkin in 2366, which involved a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant.
Jim had only been onboard for three months when the Battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg occurred. Though the Potempkin was not in range of the fight, the USS Wyoming was lost with her Captain, Captain Jon Harsting, Jim’s father.
Jim went through some turmoil, but he pressed on with his work, and was fairly successful in his tenure. He served aboard the Potempkin as Assistant Engineer until 2370.
The Potempkin was decommissioned in June of 2370. Jim sought no leave time, and within three days transferred to the USS Thunderchild, maintaining his Assistant Engineer, under Lieutenant Brexen Ijoula. At first he was rather agitated at this, as Brexen was younger then him and held less tenure, but soon, after working with her and befriending her, he quickly grew to enjoy the new position.
During the Borg Incursion of 2373 into Sector 001, the USS Thunderchild saw battle. The vessel took heavy damage, though Jim was able to save the ship from a Warp Core Breach, and get the shields back online. He was severely injured, receiving plasma radiation burns on much of his torso.
He was reprimanded officially by his Captain and Brexen for disobeying direct orders to abandon ship, but was given three Starfleet Commendations for his bravery and valor, as well as potentially saving the lives of nearly 500 crewmates. Two months later, he was subsequently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
During his remaining years aboard the Thunderchild, he and Brexen became good friends, often sharing in many activities together. He passed on four offered promotions during this time to stay aboard the Thunderchild.
In 2376, Brexen was transferred to a Classified Project, and Jim transferred back to Earth, where he was offered the position of Captain of Engineering, which entailed taking up the position of Head of Starfleet Corps of Engineering, Sol System Division.
During the 2378-79 Academy Season, Jim also taught Advanced Engineering courses at Starfleet Academy. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commodore, and began developing a heavily revised Terrasect Class of Starship with Starfleet R&D.
Jim was promoted to Rear Admiral in 2381, and was posted at the Starfleet Academy Base on Vulcan, where he remained for the next three years.
In 2384, Jim requested to transfer to anywhere but there, as he found Vulcan culture dry, though he did respect it. After only 2 weeks, the Federation Council assigned Jim to the United Forces Fleet at Starbase 234. He was initially assigned to the small fleet as an Academy Instructor and Head of Research and development, however, in 2385, Jim was offered the position of Naval Commandant of the United Forces, and as such promoted to the Rank of Fleet Admiral. There he served as Naval Commandant, Head of Research and Development, as well as Commandant of the Academy in the United Forces. In addition, he was later placed as Commanding Officer on a ship he designed, the USS Terrasect, NCC-70000, after he had filled out staffing in the positions he held. Also, in 2385, he married one Analasa Sonhi, whom he had met at the academy almost 15 years prior.
Tragically, in 2386, his wife, Analasa, was declared Missing in Action. Her body was never found. Jim, after this loss, immersed himself in his work aboard the Terrasect. However, early in 2387, himself and the crew of the USS Terrasect vanished without a trace. They appeared at Deep Space 12 on January 14, 2390, completely unaware that three years of their lives had disappeared. This phenomenon was caused by a slight imbalance in the quantum field generator for the Anti-Verteron Deflector Array for the Slipstream Drive of the Terrasect.
After a going through a few missions, it was apparent that the Terrasect was needed more in the past from whence it came. After 3 months, Jim and the Terrasect forumlated a way to return to 2387 by the same means that they were sent into the future. They arrived back in Federation Space on March 17, 2387. However, the Terrasect was badly damaged in the time jump, and subsequently was docked at the United Forces Fleet while it underwent refit.
During the time of the refit, Jim was transferred to temporarily head the "Fleet Command" sub-fleet. Near the end of his tenure there, he was tempted to resign his commission and return to earth, so instead, he requested a transfer back to the United Forces and a requested reduction in rank to Captain.
Captain James Harsting currently command's the USS Terrasect NCC-70000 under the flag of the United Forces.
