There was one last thing to be taken care of before she would retire for the night. The Bajoran. Until he had come aboard, T'meryl had been the only non-Rihannsu officer on the oira. Despite thousands of years of genetic separation, the Vulcan was in some ways still related. They shared many things in common though the Vulcans suppressed rather than reveled in their passions. Jerrod Renn was an unknown. Though he had performed his duties well enough during the mission, she needed to find out why and needed him to understand that whatever motivated him personally, his service to this ship, to herself, came first. She did not wish for him to be questioned having not taken an Oath of Loyalty.
She tapped her comm. "Vaed'rae. (Attention, hear me) erei'Arrain Jerrod Renn, I wish to speak with you in my ready room, immediately."

Renn crossed the oira quickly and heads to the Riov's office. Lets himself in since he knows he was expected. He salutes the Riov and waits.

As Jerrod entered, she tried to read his expression. He would have had no idea why he was called. Would that have had him on edge? He appeared calm however, perhaps it was due to his background and training. Those who were trained religiously often knew how to appear aloof and unaffected by their surroundings. She returned his salute, her eyes falling to his side. He carried no weapon. No matter. One's personal honor did not reside in one's sidearm.
"As a result of the extraordinary circumstances that occurred after your boarding and during our mission, I was unable to meet with you formally and to require your Oath of Loyalty. It was agreed upon by both Galae and the Tal'Shiar that any officer serving in a critical position aboard this ship would be required to give such an oath, pledging loyalty to the ship and myself. That oath is one pledged with your life. If you fail in your duty, by your oath, you ask for me to take your life in exchange for that failure. I tell you this now to give you the chance to either speak the oath or without prejudice you will allowed to deboard here at the station."
She waited a moment for him absorb what she had told to him.
"Do you wish to give that Oath?"

I was not told by my former superiors that such an oath was required, but I will take one with the condition that you answer one question.

She raised an eyebrow in surprise at his audacity.
"Au may request that I answer your question but au may not make it a condition."

With respect, its not that I am opposed to taking an aoth but this is no small thing to a Bajoran. When I reported to this vessel I swore to learn everything I could about the Rihannsu people. So I want, no I thirst for as much information as I could. He stopped for a moment. I don't want to take an oath as a condition anymore than you want to answer a question as one. So I need to understand this oath. My questions is simply this: What does the oath mean to you personally?

She was reminded just then that she had never had the opportunity to take the Oath herself before Riov Cretak had been transferred.
"My oath is inherent. In taking command of this ship, I pledge with my life to serve the needs of the Rihannsu people. Though service to the Empire is what every Rihannha dedicates him or herself to, the responsibility is greater here and therefore the commitment must be absolute. The Oath is the outward symbol of that commitment, given in acknowledgment of one's responsibility to the service."
"Does this answer your question?"
In truth, it was a much more complicated situation. This duty required her service extend to the Alliance Fleet and to the Starfleet officers assigned here. Mnhei'sahe honor/Ruling passion) could be a difficult mistress to please.

Such a thing for a Bajoran is implied but I'm willing to state it formally. Should I be standing or kneeling or what?

"I have told you the essence of the Oath, what it entails and the consequences of breaking that pledge. I wish for you to use that understanding now and use your own words to tell me of your desire to serve. This is usually done while offering one's neca (personal dagger) to symbolize your willingness to give your life and it is returned to you once your Oath is accepted, however as you carry no weapon, I will accept your word as sufficient."

Renn stood there and stared at the Riov. In his own words? He who had in some way broken the most important oath he had ever taken. I Jerrod Renn of Bajor, he said as he gripped his knuckles white. Pledge my loyalty to this ship. The lives lost over the years went through his mind. Pledge his life? He would pledge that and more if he could guarantee no more deaths on his watch. Pledge my body to its protection that of her Riov. He looked at her intensely as he went on. I pledge my mind to keeping it running. I pledge this oath to all of this and more. I don't pledge my death to this ship and her crew, but my life as long as I live and serve it
He finished and had noticed that somewhere along the lines he had closed his eyes and now opened them. I don't have a necca to hand you but I do give you this. He takes his dejara out of his pocket and hands it to the Riov. This is the symbol of a life ending and a new one beginning. Do with it whatever suits you.

She had not thought of it before. Though it was allowable for the Starfleet officers to wear such accoutrements, he had chosen specifically not to wear this symbol of his training and heritage. However, he did still choose to carry it. It still held some meaning for him. Even with his eyes closed she could see that he also carried some secrets and a personal pain. She meant to find out more about his reasons for choosing this assignment later but he had given her no reason to question his sincerity or his commitment.
She stood and picked up the silver earring that meant so much more to a Bajoran.
"I accept the offering and the symbol of your service and return it to you as a reminder of the same."

He took it back and gave her a Rihannsu salute. Thank you, Riov.
